Clair Ralph Reynolds was born March 4, 1939 in Moravia, New York. He was the fourth of six children and the third of four sons of Helen and Ralph Reynolds. One or two years after he was born, his family moved to Kings Ferry, New York, where he attended elementary school and high school. He then worked in manufacturing for National Cash Register Company for about three years in Ithaca, New York.
When Clair was about 22 years of age, he became a member of the United States Air Force. After completing training in Texas, he was assigned to March Air Force Base in Riverside, California, where he worked for three years in telephone maintenance.
