A home health aide accused of stabbing an 84-year-old Long Island woman and urging her to “just let go” was formally charged with attempted murder.
Amanda Fraser, 23, of Queens, was indicted by a Nassau County jury Friday, Nov. 21, for second-degree attempted murder, multiple counts of assault, and endangering a vulnerable elderly person.
The alleged attack happened around 2 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, inside the victim’s Massapequa home on Bay Drive, where Fraser was employed as an overnight home health aide, as Daily Voice reported.
Fraser allegedly walked into the woman’s bedroom, pulled out an eight-inch chef’s knife, and stabbed it into her torso as she slept, according to the Nassau County DA’s office.
The victim awoke in pain and tried to remove the knife, but Fraser kept her hand on the handle and held the blade in place for 16 minutes while repeatedly telling her, “just let go” and “stop fighting it,” prosecutors alleged.
At approximately 2:24 a.m., Fraser pulled the knife out and left the home, leaving the woman bleeding in her bed, prosecutors said.
Nassau County Police responded around 8:30 a.m., when a daytime caregiver discovered the victim injured. She was taken to Nassau University Medical Center and treated for a punctured lung and an infection stemming from the wound. She remained hospitalized until this week.
Officers found Fraser’s Dodge Charger parked in the middle of the homeowner’s front lawn, prosecutors said. Fraser was arrested in Queens later the same day. Investigators did not speculate on a possible motive for the alleged attack.
“For an excruciating 16 minutes as the woman moaned in agony, Amanda Fraser – the woman’s home health aide – held the knife firm in her body and repeatedly whispered for the woman to succumb,” said Nassau County DA Anne Donnelly.
“When she did not die, the defendant left the home, and the woman she was employed to care for, bleeding and alone in her bed. This defendant allegedly only brought pain and horror to their lives.”
Fraser faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
