Tropical Cyclone Fina is on track to hit Darwin on Saturday, with authorities warning it may intensify to a severe tropical cyclone over the weekend.
The category 2 cyclone is currently located about 90km southwest of Minjilang and 145 kilometres northeast of Darwin as of Saturday morning.
So far it’s crossed the Coburg Peninsula into the Van Dieman Gulf.
It’s moving southwest at 11km per hour and is expected to hit north of Darwin later on Saturday.
“After passing Darwin, Fina is forecast to further intensify to a severe tropical cyclone on Sunday or early Monday as it moves through the southern Timor Sea. There is a chance that it could reach category 3 intensity during Saturday as it moves through the Van Diemen Gulf,” the Bureau of Meteorology have warned.
