NASHUA, N.H. —

A former hazardous waste site in Nashua will turn into hundreds of new homes once cleanup of the site is complete, developers said.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held Friday at the former Mohawk Tannery site, but officials said a lot of work is needed before building can begin.

The cleanup is estimated to cost $31 million and is expected to take about a year to complete.

The plan is to develop 546 new homes at the site of the former tannery, which operated from the 1920s until the 1980s. The tannery produced hides for leather and disposed of waste in on-site lagoons. Officials said the sludge and soil became contaminated with heavy metals and other harmful compounds.
