A 76-year-old man who was struck in a hit-and-run crash in Freeport has died from his injuries, Nassau County police announced on Thursday, Nov. 20.
Detectives said the crash happened around 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, when Octavio Dejesus Espinal Sime, of West Babylon, was crossing North Grove Street at Brooklyn Avenue and was hit by a light-colored sedan operated by an unknown driver. The vehicle fled southbound without stopping, according to police.
Espinal Sime was taken by Northwell Health ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries, investigators said.
A GoFundMe titled “Our Father Has Gained His Wings After Hit-and-Run Tragedy” announced his passing and described him as a hardworking, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who “dedicated his life to his family.”
“He fought hard for his life, but after days of prayers and hope, he peacefully gained his wings,” the family wrote. “He was a hardworking, loving, and humble man… His smile, kindness, and strength touched everyone who knew him.”
The fundraiser, which has raised more than $11,000 toward a $30,000 goal, is now seeking support for funeral and memorial costs as the family prepares their final goodbyes. Click here to donate.
The Homicide Squad is continuing to investigate.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
