MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - One by one, St. Egbert Catholic School fifth graders are stepping forward to receive a box of food items from cars during a six-week school drive.
“We’ve been taking cans to people who don’t really have food for this Thanksgiving, and they need it,” St. Egbert Catholic School student Hudson Barefoot said.
This year, the students collected more than 1,400 canned and non-perishable food items, the highest total the school has achieved in the seven years they’ve participated.
Every few months, St. Egbert Catholic School has a community service project where students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade collect food items to distribute to Martha’s Mission Cupboard , a nonprofit emergency food pantry.
Organizers say the demand is much higher this year.
