At least 10 people are dead, including two children, and more than 450 are injured after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Bangladesh.

The epicentre of the earthquake was close to the Narsingdi district, about 30km from the capital, Dhaka. The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 10km.

Dhaka-based DBC Television said two children were among the dead.

Friday's quake, which lasted for several seconds, caused buildings to sway, sending panicked residents into the streets. The Fire Service and Civil Defence emergency response department reported cracks in a number of buildings in Dhaka.

Four people died in the capital, including three who were killed when a railing fell on them from an eight-storey building, according to police officer Rafiqul Islam.
