Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. temporarily cleared the way Friday for a new Texas congressional map that would give Republicans an edge in winning five additional House seats.

The brief pause on a lower-court order will give the high court time to consider an appeal by Texas, which is seeking to overturn a ruling that found the map improperly disadvantaged minority voters.

Texas formally asked the Supreme Court to overrule that decision Friday evening. Justice Alito asked groups challenging the map to submit a response to the challenge by Monday, setting up a ruling in the days or weeks afterward.
