WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The head of the state police force is taking responsibility after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested an undocumented immigrant inside a Maui courthouse.
Critics say the tactic creates a climate of fear that has no place in the justice system.
Surveillance video from inside the Wailuku courthouse on Oct. 21 shows plainclothes ICE agents coming through a back entrance.
They found and arrested Esteban Tlachi Valazquez after his court appearance for driving under the influence and driving without a license.
The head of Hawaii’s Department of Law Enforcement says that should not have happened.
