HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Law enforcement, education and community leaders announced a new partnership Friday morning aimed at reducing crime and building community connections on the west side.

The Safe & Sound Westside initiative combines law enforcement strategies and provides the community with prevention, intervention, and treatment programs to improve community wellness in West Oahu, officials said.

Officials said the response to the crime crisis began a year ago and has shown progress across all categories.

Honolulu prosecutor Steve Alm said targeting the worst offenders with longer sentences and reduced bail opportunities has brought down crime rates.
