Thijs De Ridder scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds Friday as Virginia overcame Northwestern 83-78 at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Facing a power-conference opponent for the first time in the Ryan Odom coaching era, the Cavaliers (5-0) trailed much of the game.

But De Ridder and freshman reserve Chance Mallory, who tied his season high with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, sparked the Cavaliers before both fouled out. Malik Thomas scored 14 and fellow starter Dallin Hall 11.

UVA overcame 5-of-24 3-point shooting. The Cavaliers will stay at the Greenbrier to face Butler at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Jayden Reid led Northwestern (4-1) with 24 points.
