A blitz targeting tax dodgers has uncovered almost $900 million in avoided taxes or illegally claimed exemptions, as new data also reveals a growing financial strain on property owners who are not paying their surging land tax bills.
State Revenue Office investigations, using artificial intelligence tools, identified $155 million more in alleged tax avoidance last year compared with the year before.
New figures reveal the $889 million of total liabilities identified in 2024-25 across 13,412 completed cases included avoided taxes and levies, and falsely claimed grants or concessions that the revenue body actively pursued.
However, the SRO’s data also points to significant financial hardship among taxpayers grappling with new and expanded levies. Outstanding land tax debts have hit $643.5
