Police are investigating after a man who allegedly shot at officers during an attempted arrest was later found dead on a property in Canberra's south last night.

ACT Policing said officers went to the house on Galloway Street in Isabella Plains at about 7:50pm to arrest a 71-year-old man for serious family violence offences allegedly committed against his partner.

His partner was in hospital, police said, being treated for her injuries.

When police arrived, the man allegedly fired several shots at them.

Police said they returned fire and the man barricaded himself in a shed, refusing to speak to police.
