Most Dakota and Lakota community leaders in Indian Country contacted by the Herald say UND’s “Fighting Sioux” team nickname name should be changed.

And they said that Indian people should have more to say about how their name is used.

Tim Giago, publisher of Indian Country Today (formerly the Lakota Times) in Rapid City, S.D., said the name is racist and an insult to all Indian people. He said it’s not a trivial issue.
