The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has confirmed that it is conducting an active and ongoing investigation into newly elected Chapin Mayor William “Bill” Mitchell Jr. involving an alleged assault that occurred at Chapin Town Hall on Nov. 7.

According to SLED, the investigation into Mitchell was launched at the request of the Chapin Police Department.

Mitchell was elected mayor on Nov. 4, to fill the vacancy left by the death of incumbent mayor Al Koon, who passed away two weeks before the Nov. 4 election.

According to town code, as the newly-elected mayor Mitchell took office immediately after the election in order to fill the existing vacancy and the alleged incident occurred when Mitchell arrived at Chapin Town Hall on Nov. 7, demanding to be sworn in early.
