Morgan Geyser, who gained notoriety for her role in a brutal stabbing incident linked to the fictional character "Slender Man," has escaped from a group home in Wisconsin. Authorities reported that Geyser, 22, cut off her Department of Corrections monitoring bracelet and left the facility, prompting a search by local police.
The Madison Police Department was alerted to Geyser's disappearance on Sunday morning. She was last seen on Saturday evening around 8 p.m. with an adult acquaintance. Police have released a surveillance image of Geyser and are urging anyone who sees her to call 911.
In 2014, Geyser and her friend Anissa Weier lured their classmate, Payton Leutner, into a wooded area in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where Geyser stabbed her 19 times. The attack was reportedly intended to appease the fictional character Slender Man, who has a cult following online. Leutner survived the attack after crawling to safety and receiving medical attention.
Geyser and Weier were charged as adults and initially pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder. However, their pleas were later vacated when they were found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Both were subsequently committed to psychiatric institutions.
In March, a judge ordered Geyser's release from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute to a group home after three psychologists testified that she was ready for supervised release. As part of her release conditions, she was required to wear a monitoring bracelet.
Concerns about Geyser's behavior had been raised prior to her release. Prosecutors noted that she had engaged in "violent" communication with an individual outside the facility and had read disturbing material while in treatment. Despite these concerns, she was transferred to the group home.
A spokesperson for Payton Leutner's family confirmed they are aware of Geyser's escape and are cooperating with law enforcement to ensure their safety. The family expressed gratitude for the support they have received during this time.
Geyser's case has drawn significant media attention, and her escape has raised alarms about public safety. Law enforcement continues to search for her as they work to locate her whereabouts.
