The 2026 governor’s race is critical for the future stability of Detroit. No state can effectively function without its most populous city, which is home to some of the biggest industries needed to oil the wheels of the employment machine to put food on the table for families.
Because of that, Detroit has a lot riding on the governor’s race. The outcome of the election next year will determine how successful Mary Sheffield, the incoming mayor, will be. Because for the city to address some of its economic challenges, it will need the cooperation of Lansing, and that includes both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
