Area food banks now have more than 1 million additional meals to serve thanks to donations made in the region’s largest annual food drive.
The Mayflower Marathon, conducted by Hampton Roads Media Group, collected 1,007,000 meals, according to organizers. It took place simultaneously at five locations from 5:30 a.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Sunday.
On the Southside, the locations were Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach and Kroger in North Suffolk. On the Peninsula, donations were collected at Kroger at Coliseum Central in Hampton and Kroger in Tabb. And in North Carolina, there was a donation location at the Moyock Welcome Center.
