Fans of the series say the film version is well worth a watch (Image: BBC)

A feature film based on one of Britain's most cherished comedy series is broadcasting on television today, before becoming available to stream free of charge for a limited period.

This relatively overlooked Second World War film is essential viewing for admirers of programmes such as Blackadder and M*A*S*H, as it approaches the turbulent era of global history with characteristically dry British wit.

Dad's Army is primarily recognised as the hugely successful sitcom which aired for nine series on BBC One from 1968 to 1977.

Whilst it remains enormously popular with millions of Britons today, even some of the programme's most devoted followers may not have watched the cinematic version released in 1971.
