After Shedeur Sanders became the first rookie since 1995 to win his debut start for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting Sanders has been named the team's starter going forward.
The move comes after Sanders helped lead the Browns to a 24-10 victory on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, going 11-for-20 through the air while racking up 209 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Sanders made his first appearance of the season last week in relief of injured quarterback Dillon Gabriel, a fellow rookie who had started six games for the Browns this season. Gabriel left the team's Week 11 showdown with the Ravens due to a concussion and was unavailable this past week, leading to Sanders getting his first taste of regular-season action. It didn't go well, as he went 4-for-16 passing for just 47 yards and one interception with zero touchdowns. But he bounced back and looked strong on Sunday as he led Cleveland to a win.
The news comes less than 24 hours after Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was noncommittal regarding whether or not Sanders had earned the starting job after helping the Browns earn just their third win of the season. Gabriel is expected to return to action relatively quickly, and while he was just 1-5 as the team's starter, he had put up a strong stat line – going 109-for-184 passing with 937 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions in eight appearances.
"I'm not going to get into that," Stefanski said. "Obviously proud of [Shedeur], proud of this offense. There are a ton of things to learn from, but I'm just going to worry about today."
For his part, Sanders seemed confident after leading the Browns to victory on Sunday, and there's no doubt he'll have the appropriate amount of bravado required for the role of an NFL starting quarterback as he prepares to step into the role.
"A lot of people want to see me fail and, it ain't gonna happen. It ain't gonna happen," Sanders said.
