EDMONTON - A total of nine members of the United Conservative Party (UCP) in Alberta are now facing recall petitions, according to Elections Alberta. The latest group includes six individuals: five cabinet ministers and the Speaker of the legislature.
The cabinet ministers facing recall are Myles McDougall, who serves as the Minister of Advanced Education; Muhammad Yaseen, the associate Minister of Multiculturalism; Rajan Sawhney, the Minister of Indigenous Affairs; RJ Sigurdson, the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation; and Dale Nally, the Minister of Service Alberta. Additionally, Ric McIver, the Speaker of the House, is also included in the petitions.
McDougall, Yaseen, Sawhney, and McIver represent ridings in Calgary. Sigurdson is the MLA for Highwood, which encompasses Okotoks and Diamond Valley, while Nally represents Morinville-St. Albert.
Previously, Elections Alberta approved recall petitions for Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, who represents Calgary-Elbow; deputy Speaker Angela Pitt, who serves Airdrie-East; and Grande Prairie MLA Nolan Dyck.
The recall process allows petitioners to gather signatures over several months within a constituency. If they collect enough valid signatures, a vote will be held to determine whether to recall the MLA. This lengthy process could potentially lead to significant changes in the legislature. If all nine targeted MLAs are recalled, the UCP could lose its majority status in the Alberta legislature.
