Electric utility bills across most of the state will increase Dec. 1 to account for the higher costs of electric generation.
These charges — also called the price-to-compare because they are the part of the utility bill that customers can shop for with other suppliers — are adjusted semi-annually to reflect the cost of power that Pennsylvania utilities buy on the PJM grid, which directs the flow of electricity between 13 states. They apply to all non-shopping residential customers which typically comprise about 80% of a utility’s residential base.
In southwestern Pennsylvania, Duquesne Light customers will see a 10.6% increase in the price to compare, from 12.43 cents per kilowatt hour to 13.75 cents. This follows a 14.6% increase in this portion of the bill on June 1.
