LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County Public Schools, Kentucky’s second-largest school district, is moving forward with an eminent domain takeover of land currently owned by private citizens.
The Fayette County Board of Education began taking land via eminent domain near the new Rise STEM Academy for Girls off Versailles Road, filing four lawsuits in Fayette Circuit Court last week. Chief operating officer Myron Thompson said this is not how the district wanted to proceed.
“In the last 40 years we’ve only had to do this one other time for an elementary school in the Masterson Station Subdivision,” Thompson said.
The district maintains it needs the eight feet of land, currently divided by a curb, for a bus route leading up to the school. Thompson said that shifting the route away from the back
