GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Around 8 p.m. Saturday night, Grand Rapids Police Department Chief Eric Winstrom said a couple was leaving a restaurant on Monroe Avenue when a group of masked teens approached them and tried to take their leftovers.
From there, the chief says a fight, captured on camera, broke out. He says GRPD officers were nearby and able to intervene quickly.
"Thankfully, we already had officers in the vicinity," said Winstrom. "Because of the holiday festivities, we took part in the Christmas parade and the tree lighting ceremony. So fortunately, having those officers nearby made all the difference, and we were able to bring what could have been a very serious, even a tragic, deadly situation, brought it under control very quickly."
Winstrom said the couple didn't know the tee
