CALL, Texas — 45 people were arrested during a Saturday night raid on a dog fighting ring in the rural community of Call, off FM 1004, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Colton Havard said all 45 suspects arrested in the raid have since been released on $5000 bonds, and at least two of the dogs involved are receiving medical attention.

“The dogfighting is a very inhumane, cruel crime, you know, probably one of the most disturbing things I've seen throughout my career,” Havard said.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Pitbull,” began with a tip in March and ultimately led to the arrest of 45 people, some of whom traveled to rural Newton County from as far as San Antonio, authorities said.

“You know, it has no place in Newton County,” Havard said.
