One Times Square has unveiled the new Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball. Called The Constellation Ball, it is the ninth version of the Times Square Ball since 1907 and the largest yet, measuring 12.5 feet across and weighing 12,350 pounds, according to One Times Square.
The ball features 5,280 circular Waterford crystals — nearly double the number on the previous ball — and uses new LED lighting. The circular design marks a shift from the triangular Waterford crystals used since 1999.
“We have the most digitally evolved lighting and sound sequence that's attached to the ball. The ball was built by New Yorkers with design, with ingenuity, and with parts and pieces from around,” said Michael Phillips, president of Jamestown, the owner and operator of One Times Square, which concepted and designed the new Ball.
“Today, a global icon becomes a quintessential New York City experience for both New Yorkers and 65 million visitors who visit New York city annually. The ball will be more than a centerpiece of New Year's Eve. It will become a touch point for people to connect to the magic of our city year- round,” said Julie Coker, president and CEO of New York City Tourism + Conventions.
