The Federal Aviation Administration is bracing for what's expected to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel period in 15 years, as airports rebound from unprecedented flight restrictions put in place during the government shutdown.

The rush is already underway, but the FAA is anticipating peak travel on Tuesday, with more than 52,000 flights forecasted.

It comes roughly one week after the Trump administration allowed airlines to resume normal operations after lifting flight reduction orders put in place to relieve pressure on air traffic controllers. Controllers missed paychecks during the federal funding lapse, and many called out of work.
