LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Waverly completed an undefeated season by capturing the Class B Championship with a 42-27 win over Gretna East on Monday. The Vikings scored 28 unanswered points and fought off a late surge by the Griffins.
Waverly senior running back Nathan Axmann powered the Vikings with 277 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Axmann struck the Heisman pose following his second score, much to the delight of Waverly’s loud and supportive crowd.
Waverly’s only other state football championship occurred in 1980. Players thanked the community for its support throughout the season during a live interview on 10/11 following the game. Junior quarterback Broxton Teply completed 8-of-11 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Gavin McMillan and Connor Schere each had TD receptions.
