The USA is special in many ways, but our public lands are one of our most special features. I live in Colorado, which is exceptional in its abundant beautiful, and previously protected, lands. When we think of public lands, we think of places open for all people to explore, not mining, drilling and industrial centers. If the Trump administration gets its way, these lands will no longer be protected. Coloradans will not hesitate to oppose the “keep out, drilling in progress” signs that could soon block public access to these wide-open spaces.
After more than 40 years of putting extractive industries first, the Bureau of Land Management took a historic step in 2024 by implementing the Public Lands Rule. For the first time, that agency made clear what the law always required: conservation —
