The Trump administration has quietly launched one of its most radical economic experiments yet : using taxpayer money to buy ownership stakes in private companies it deems “critical” to national security.

In just six months, the government has lined up more than $10 billion for minority stakes — or options to take stakes later — in at least nine firms tied to steel, minerals, semiconductors, and nuclear energy.
