A teenage girl has died and a young driver remains in hospital fighting for his life after an A19 crash near Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to the A19 northbound just after 11pm on Monday (November 24) when a yellow Vauxhall Corsa "left the carriageway" and caught fire following a crash.

The male driver of the Corsa and his female passenger were left with serious injuries in the incident, which took place between the B1404 at Seaham and the A690 Herrington Interchange.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, the girl, aged 17, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, aged 19, was taken to hospital where he remains fighting for his life.
