BOSTON —
The Red Sox swung a trade for a starting pitcher on Tuesday.
Right-handed starter Sonny Gray will head to Boston in the trade, while right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts and left-handed pitching prospect Brandon Clarke will head to the St. Louis Cardinals.
According to reports , St. Louis has agreed to kick in $20 million to help offset Gray’s salary.

Gray, 36, is entering the final year of the contract he signed before the 2024 season.
He was the 2023 runner-up for the Cy Young Award. That season with the Twins, he went 8-8 with a 2.79 ERA and 183 strikeouts.
With St. Louis the past two years, Gray went 27-17 with a 4.07 ERA.
