JAMES Murphy writes much with which I agree, but disappointingly in his letter of November 21 he misconstrued my words of the previous day. My appeal for at least a little positive independence framing (in letters to these pages) of repeated criticisms of the SNP was neither an attempt to deny the truth or “a refusal to look at” the immense scale of the task still ahead of those who wish Scotland to be “free”.

Clearly James has not only not read my letter with an open mind, but also has not read my letters published in other newspapers that persistently confront misconceptions about the actual functioning of the Union while presenting the considerable merits, as well as the challenges, of self-determination (all aimed at encouraging more “undecideds” to open their minds to independenc
