A new Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity at Rutgers University will centralize handling of discrimination, sexual misconduct and harassment complaints and compliance with federal and state laws, Rutgers President William Tate said in a university-wide announcement on Nov. 25.
The move comes at a time when the Trump administration has closed at least seven of 12 regional offices in the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, including its New York location; withdrawn funding for colleges enrolling large numbers of Hispanic and African American students, and called DEI policies "illegal ."
