A new Liverpool-based tourist tax could be introduced IN 2028 after the government granted powers to regional mayors to introduce an overnight accommodation levy. Ahead of a crucial budget in Parliament tomorrow, Communities Secretary Steve Reed has confirmed the Liverpool City Region will be given the ability to add a charge on hotel stays in the city.

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram – who has campaigned for the tourist tax – said a “modest” levy could bring in around £17m to the city each year. Currently, Liverpool’s Accommodation BID implements a £2 overnight charge within its area.
