On Nov. 6, the U.S. Department of Education announced details of plans to revamp the federal-student loan system as laid out in President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

As part of the changes, the Department of Education will no longer consider certain degrees, including nursing, as “professional.”

The decision has received widespread criticism from the medical community and nurses on social media.

“To get to the point where you’re saying that I’m not a professional, with all the licensure, all the studying, all the tests, all the certifications that I have, it’s just unimaginable,” said Psychiatric Nurse Practicioner Bettina Rodgers in a post on TikTok .

Wendy Brindley Hines, a nurse who said she voted for Trump three times, also spoke out against the decision.
