FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A neighbor who witnessed a New Haven house fire Monday night said he heard a “loud boom” before seeing flames erupt from the structure.

The home is uninhabitable after a fire broke out in the garage, investigators said. One person who was inside during the fire was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition.

Another person was treated for injuries on the scene.

Fire crews responded to reports of an explosion at about 9 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found the garage engulfed in flames.

Neighbor Rick Griffith said he heard the boom and got up to see what was going on.

“The garage door was closed,” Griffin said. “The flames were coming out the top and the sides.”

“I immediately called 911.”
