University of Cincinnati Athletic Director John Cunningham has issued a public apology to BYU for “religiously derogatory language” used by some fans during the Bearcats’ 24-16 home loss to the Cougars on Saturday at Nippert Stadium.

Videos circulated on social media showed some UC fans chanting “(Expletive) the Mormons” at BYU on Saturday, which marked Senior Day and the final home game of the season for the Bearcats.

Brigham Young University, located in Provo, Utah, is “founded, supported and guided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” according to the school’s website .

“On behalf of the University of Cincinnati and Bearcats Athletics, I want to sincerely apologize to the BYU community and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” Cunningham said in a state
