EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The bell in the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse is ringing out once again.
Officials say back in May, during a routine inspection, County maintenance staff discovered the bell’s drop hammer had snapped off its base after an estimated 7 million strikes over its 134-year lifespan.
Now, the over 6-month wait is over.
County Commissioner Chirf Deputy, Laura Tomes, says she is happy the bell is back.
“We’re very excited,” Tomes stated. “We’ve gotten lot’s of calls, the people in the building have missed the bell, I’ve missed the bell, so we’re very excited to have it back.”
Officials commisioned a replacement bell hammer from the McShane Bell Foundery, the same company that made the bell back in 1890.
