COLUMBIA — Kansas City-based Frontier Schools announced Monday it is applying to open a charter school in Columbia. It's the second group that's announced plans to do so , the other being Columbia-based employment center Job Point.

Charter schools are privately run schools paid for through public funds. This means the money going to them would take away money from Columbia Public Schools.

The Missouri General Assembly passed a law allowing charter schools in Boone County in 2024. Every public school board in the county opposed the bill.

Lawmakers, educators and administrators have adamantly expressed their thoughts as to whether charter schools belong in the county in the year-plus since.
