FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Volunteers at the St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen are preparing to serve more than 1500 meals on Thursday for Thanksgiving.
The soup kitchen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church serves meals 7 days a week, adding up to more than 300,000 meals per year.
Hal and Andrea Thomas have been a part of St. Mary’s Thanksgiving meal since its start in 1978.
“It was total chaos, but we put together turkeys, and mashed potatoes, and green beans, and cranberry sauce. We hadn’t really planned for leftovers or cleanup, but those of us that were around just pitched in and did what was necessary,” said volunteer Andrea Thomas.
Now, nearly 50 years later, the church has grown significantly, and so has the demand for food. The Thomas family has been in charge of the mashed potatoes ever since,
