ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Barnes-Jewish Hospital and providers at Washington University celebrated a milestone on Tuesday, their 14,000th organ transplant.
The transplant center performs several procedures, from heart, liver and kidney transplants.
First Alert 4 spoke with staff about this accomplishment ahead of the celebration.
Staff reflected on how much has changed in the field of performing transplant surgeries.
“The things we do now, we would have never done back then. And so it really has evolved, obviously, with the help of an incredible team, surgeons, medical personnel, administrative people, it literally takes a village,” Dr. Jeff Crippin with WashU Medicine said.
More than 115,000 people in the United States are waiting for a transplant.
