A death row inmate endured a horrific botched execution after one of the straps on the electric chair broke, engulfing him in flames and filling the room with the smell of "burning flesh". ‌

John Louis Evans III, aged 33, was executed in Alabama in 1983 following his conviction for the murder of pawnbroker Edward Nassar during a 1977 robbery spree. ‌
