BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont’s first Thanksgiving was celebrated on this day in history.
Governor Thomas Chittenden issued a proclamation that November 26, 1778, should be observed as a day of public thanksgiving across Vermont.
It came as Vermont fought alongside the 13 colonies in the Revolutionary War.
What Chittenden described as all the good that had arisen amid the many private and public distresses” caused by the war.
