The upcoming departure of the Leon’s store is going to leave a sizable retail hole in Simcoe’s downtown.

Norfolk County council has given zoning approval for the furniture store to move from its current location at 24 Norfolk St. North to the former Peavey Mart site on Queensway West.

At a council meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Amy Martin asked economic development staff if consideration had been given to what the large vacant space will be used for once Leon’s relocates.

“There is a lot of discussion in the community about moving this out of the downtown core to the Queensway,” said Martin. “I’m obviously happy to support this business and they have more space now to operate and provide a bigger and better and improved service to the community.
