It took half a century, but a longtime Lowcountry hospital owner is setting up shop in Mount Pleasant for the first time.

HCA Healthcare Charleston broke ground last week on an 11,020-square-foot emergency-services department that will open next year on Long Point Road near Interstate 526, across from Belle Hall Shopping Center .

The Nashville company, which until recently operated locally as Trident Health System , bought the vacant 4-acre property for $4.35 million about three years ago. It kicked off the permitting process in late 2024.
