GILROY, Calif. —

Multiple earthquakes struck Santa Clara County on Wednesday morning within minutes of each other, according to the U.S. Geological Survey .

The first was recorded at 6:16 a.m. with a 4.0 magnitude, about 5 miles east of Gilroy. It had a depth of 1.7 miles.

USGS also recorded a magnitude-2.7 earthquake at 6:18 a.m., and a magnitude-3.6 tremor at 6:20 a.m.

The first shake could be felt as far away as about 50 miles away, according to responses submitted to USGS. Locations include Redwood City, San Jose, Newark, Los Altos and Sunnyvale.
