DETROIT, MI – A professor at Ferris State University is on administrative leave after he was arrested by federal immigration agents.

Sumith Gunasekera was taken into custody on Nov. 12 in the Detroit area, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The agency alleges Gunasekera is an undocumented immigrant from Sri Lanka.

During his arrest, Gunasekera told agents he was employed as an associate professor for Ferris State University in Big Rapids. The university acted after learning of Gunasekera’s arrest.
