RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) - The apparent winner in that close Morehead City mayor’s race is appealing a move to send the election protest to Raleigh.

On Monday, the Carteret County Board of Elections voted 3-2 to forward Mayor Jerry Jones’ protest to the state, saying they had found “substantial evidence” or potential voting irregularities.

Jones, who lost by one vote, claims several people were not allowed to vote because of voter ID issues. The law says in those cases, people can cast provisional ballots while their ID is being investigated.

An attorney for Stiles says there was insufficient evidence presented during Monday’s hearing, and there was not enough time to “identify, interview and subpoena poll workers who were present during the alleged voter issues”.
