A woman has been killed and a man seriously injured in a shark attack on the east coast of Australia .
Police said emergency services were called to the beach in Crowdy Bay, about 360 kilometers (224 miles) north of Sydney after reports that two people in their 20s had been attacked by a shark at 6.30 am local time, the Associated Press reported.
The man sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital. The woman died at the scene. Witnesses helped the pair before ambulance paramedics arrived.
Police plan to liaise with experts to determine the shark species. The Crowdy Bay National Park beach has been closed to swimmers.
